Owner-operated garages are scattered through the light-industrial pockets behind Sardis, out along Village West and up the Young Road corridor, and Vedder Motors is one of them, in the Vedder neighborhood on the stretch between the Sardis shopping centers and the crossing at the river. The rural half of the municipality shapes what these shops actually do. Two thirds of Chilliwack is farmland, and a garage whose customers farm tends to end up handling diesel engines, trucks, trailers, RVs and agricultural equipment alongside ordinary cars. That is not automatic, though, and it is the first thing worth asking about if your vehicle tows something or spends its working life on gravel. Vedder itself has changed faster than any other part of the city except Promontory, growing 39 per cent between 2011 and 2021, most of that at the south end around Garrison Crossing and the subdivisions that filled in after the Canadian Forces base closed in 1997. More households means more vehicles and more pressure on the shops already there.
