A compact, park-heavy residential neighbourhood directly north of downtown, separated from it by the Hope Slough. Almost entirely detached houses, with more parks per block than anywhere else in Chilliwack.
Fairfield Island is an island in the old sense — the Hope Slough curls around its southern edge and separates it from the downtown, and the name stuck long after the water stopped mattering for getting about. It is the second smallest neighbourhood in Chilliwack by area but still has more people in it than half the others, packed into a grid of detached houses that is 95 per cent single-family and has barely changed shape in decades.
There is a remarkable amount of park for the size of it: Fiesta, Gwynne Vaughan, Fairfield, Strathcona, Topley, Guinet, Emerald, Glasgow, Hymar and McDonald are all inside the neighbourhood boundary.
Businesses here are mostly the kind that come to you or that you visit once a month — trades, mobile services, a few clinics and studios on the roads in from Yale Road East. For groceries and everything else, Fairfield Island crosses the slough into downtown, which is close enough to walk if the weather is behaving.
