About Minter Country Garden
An owner-run garden centre, in the Fairfield Island grid.
Minter Country Garden is a name most people in the eastern Fraser Valley already know, and it needs rather less introduction than most entries in this directory. It sits at 10015 Young Road, which puts it on Fairfield Island rather than out on the highway with the operations it is usually mentioned alongside. Young Road is one of the three streets that converge at Five Corners, so the address is a straight run north out of the downtown and over the slough.
That address is the genuinely interesting part. Fairfield Island is a compact residential neighborhood directly north of the downtown, cut off from it by the Hope Slough, and it is about as close to purely residential as Chilliwack gets: ninety-five per cent detached houses, more parks per block than anywhere else in the city, and a street grid that has barely changed shape in decades. The largest garden operations in this municipality are somewhere else entirely, strung along Highway 1 through Rosedale where they draw visitors from well beyond the valley, with more in Greendale and Yarrow. A garden center inside a housing grid is answering a different question, put by someone who is already home rather than someone who made a day of it.
This is a category Chilliwack does better than cities several times its size, and the reason is underfoot. Greenhouse and nursery growing is one of the leading agricultural sectors here, so plants sold in this city have often been potted nearby rather than trucked in from a distribution depot, and there is a parallel farm-supply strand carrying seed, feed, fencing and irrigation for people growing at scale. What follows from all of it is seasonality. Stock, and whether a trip is worth making, shift considerably between February and August. A website is published and no telephone number is given, so checking before setting out means starting online.

The twelve Chilliwack neighborhoods, and what each one is actually like
The City defines twelve neighborhoods. Three of them hold about two thirds of the population and most of the shopfronts, and the other nine run from a drained lake bed to a hillside to a working dairy landscape. Here is the honest version of each.
