About Bamboo World
An owner-run garden centre, up on Little Mountain.
Bamboo World is up on Little Mountain, on Banford Road, which is an unusual place to find garden retail in this city. The larger operations are out on the flat, along Highway 1 through Rosedale where they draw visitors from well beyond the Fraser Valley, with more scattered through Greendale and Yarrow. Little Mountain is the smallest neighbourhood in Chilliwack measured any way you like: about 1,170 people on the slopes of Mount Shannon, a block of forest through the middle, and a set of lookouts that are the reason much of the rest of the city ever comes up here.
Chilliwack handles this category better than places several times its size, and the reason is underfoot. Greenhouse and nursery growing is one of the leading agricultural sectors in a municipality where farming accounts for close to 30 per cent of economic activity, so garden retail here is frequently attached to real production rather than to a distribution warehouse. A surprising amount of what is sold was potted somewhere nearby. There are more than 700 farms inside the municipality and something over 17,000 hectares of it sits within the Agricultural Land Reserve, which is the backdrop to all of it.
A business that puts a single plant in its name is saying something about what it concentrates on, though this listing goes no further than the name and cannot confirm what is standing in the yard on a given week. Stock in this trade moves with the season in any case. Both a telephone number and a web address are published, and using one of them before driving up is sensible if the trip is for something specific. Elevation is worth a thought too. Hillside ground in Chilliwack sits well above the valley floor, and what thrives a few hundred feet up is not automatically what thrives in the fields below, which is a reasonable thing to raise with anyone selling plants on a slope.
