Schools & Tutoring
An owner-run school, in the downtown, within walking distance of Five Corners.
Independent schooling has deeper roots in Chilliwack than the size of the city might suggest. Several of the private schools here grew out of the Mennonite and Reformed communities that settled Yarrow and Greendale, Yarrow itself founded by twelve families in February 1928 on ground drained from Sumas Lake when the Vedder Canal was cut. That history is the reason the independent sector is a real alternative in this valley rather than a token one, and why this section of the directory covers more ground than it would in a comparable town elsewhere.
High Road Academy is listed in the downtown, within walking distance of Five Corners, the junction where Yale Road, Young Road and Wellington Avenue all arrive at once. That is the oldest part of the built-up city and the densest, with roughly 31 per cent of Chilliwack's residents in the neighbourhood around it. The hospital on Menholm Road, the Coliseum and better than 350 businesses are inside the same neighbourhood, so these are working streets rather than the quiet edge of a campus. Nothing accompanies the entry except the postal code, no contact details of any kind and no street number, so grades offered, admission process, fees and whether there is any space in a given year all have to come from the school itself.
The rest of this section takes in tutoring, music and language instruction, driving schools and trades training, with the national tutoring franchises left out. The formal end of education here sits at the other end of town: the University of the Fraser Valley campus at Canada Education Park, sharing a site with the RCMP Pacific Region Training Centre and a Justice Institute of BC campus, which between them make the south end of the city a genuine education district rather than somewhere that happens to have a college in it.

The drive-throughs on Luckakuck are the visible half of eating here. The interesting half is downtown, out on the farm roads, and in the strip plazas nobody photographs.
