Rosedale is the emptiest large place in Chilliwack. It runs to nearly twice the area of the next biggest neighbourhood while holding under six per cent of the population, stretching from the Fraser River in the north down to where the ground starts climbing into the Eastern Hillsides, with Highway 1 cutting straight through the middle. A school out here is a rural school by situation whatever its intentions, drawing across a wide spread of farmland rather than from the streets immediately around it, which for most families attending means a daily drive rather than a walk. The highway is some compensation, since it puts a good part of the eastern end of the valley within a straightforward run of the door.

For any school on it, a visit and a direct conversation are the only reliable way to learn what a place is, and that goes double for one sitting out on the flat with nothing next door to compare it against.
