Count up the schools in Chilliwack that operate outside the school district, and the total is larger than a city this size would suggest. The reason is who settled the valley floor. Yarrow was founded in February 1928 by twelve Mennonite families on ground drained from Sumas Lake a few years earlier, and the Mennonite and Reformed communities farming Greendale and the flats around it built schools alongside their churches. Several of those schools are still going, generations after the first classrooms went up.
