About Hofstede's Country Barn
A food shop on Luckakuck Way, in the Sardis retail district.
Every supermarket in Chilliwack belongs to a national chain, and none of them are listed in this directory. What remains is the independent half of the trade, and in this city that half is unusually deep. Something over 17,000 hectares inside the municipal boundary is farmland, more than 700 farms work it, agriculture accounts for close to 30 per cent of local economic activity, and this is the largest dairy producing area in British Columbia. The retail that grows out of that includes farm stores, greengrocers, butchers, bulk shops and the roadside stands through Greendale and Yarrow that open with the corn in August.
Hofstede's Country Barn is at 45796 Luckakuck Way in Sardis, which is where Chilliwack does most of its shopping. Cottonwood Centre and Chilliwack Mall stand either side of it and the road between them carries the heaviest retail traffic in the city. The practical effect is that the shop sits where people already are, rather than at the end of a deliberate drive into the countryside, which is where most of the valley's farm retail is found.
What is actually on the shelves is not documented, and it is the part that moves. Produce in the valley is strongly seasonal, and what comes off local ground in August is a different list from what comes off it in February. A trip made for one specific item therefore carries some risk, particularly in the cold half of the year. No telephone number or website is published, which removes the option of checking first and leaves the address as the only dependable thing to go on. The postal code will resolve to the correct block. Beyond that, what can be said is where the shop is and roughly what kind of shop it is; the rest is a matter of walking in and looking.

The twelve Chilliwack neighborhoods, and what each one is actually like
The City defines twelve neighborhoods. Three of them hold about two thirds of the population and most of the shopfronts, and the other nine run from a drained lake bed to a hillside to a working dairy landscape. Here is the honest version of each.

Chilliwack eats in three separate places, and only one of them is obvious
The Luckakuck strip is the visible half of eating in Chilliwack, and the least interesting. The rest is downtown around Five Corners, in the numbered units of the Vedder Road plazas, and out on the farm roads through Greendale and Yarrow.

Where Chilliwack actually shops, and why nearly all of it is on two roads
Nearly every storefront in a 261 square kilometre city sits on one L of two roads, Yale and Vedder. Here is how Chilliwack retail is really arranged, which end of the L to drive to, and the few things worth leaving it for.
