An owner-run restaurant, in the old commercial grid around Five Corners.
Anyone weighing up dinner downtown against dinner at the south end is choosing between two eras of Chilliwack retail as much as between two menus. Jimmy J's Grill is at 8559 Young Road, one of the arms running out from Five Corners, in the old grid that was the commercial centre of this town long before the malls existed. It is a location with a different logic to a strip plaza: foot traffic, offices, and people already downtown for something else.
Independent dining in Chilliwack is scattered rather than clustered, which is the single most useful thing to know before deciding where to eat. Downtown holds the highest concentration, around Five Corners and in the District 1881 redevelopment on the old Chilliwack Cattle Sales site, which brought a run of newer kitchens in beside the older ones. Vedder Road through Sardis and Vedder has more rooms in absolute terms, though most sit in plazas and are easy to drive straight past. Out in Yarrow and Rosedale a handful have outlasted several owners and are worth the drive if you have the evening for it. Chains are excluded from this site, so a restaurant entry here is a local business by definition rather than by claim.
A phone number is published; a website is not. That combination is common among the older downtown rooms and it shapes how to approach the place. There is no menu to read in advance, no hours page and no online booking, so anything you want settled before arriving has to be asked out loud. Worth asking: whether reservations are taken at all, whether the kitchen stops before the room does, and where people park on that block. The word grill in a Canadian restaurant name covers an enormous amount of ground and should not be read as a description of the food. Five minutes on the telephone will tell you more than any directory entry can, this one included.

The drive-throughs on Luckakuck are the visible half of eating here. The interesting half is downtown, out on the farm roads, and in the strip plazas nobody photographs.
