A local hair salon on the Vedder Road run south toward the river, on Vedder Road.
Salons in Chilliwack have followed the houses, and the houses have gone south. The greatest number now sit along the Vedder Road corridor through Sardis and Vedder, in the strip plazas serving subdivisions that filled in over the last fifteen years, with an older group downtown around Five Corners where some rooms have been operating for decades. Promontory and the Eastern Hillsides above have almost no commercial space at all, so stylists working for those streets generally rent a chair down on the flat or run a home studio. An address at 6640 Vedder Road puts this one firmly in the first group.
Vedder is the fastest growing neighbourhood in the city, up 39 per cent between 2011 and 2021, and second only to the downtown for population now. A good deal of that is Garrison Crossing, built on the grounds of the Canadian Forces base that closed in 1997, together with the subdivisions that filled in around it. Canada Education Park and the University of the Fraser Valley campus are in the same neighbourhood, which adds a student population to the corridor. A salon on this stretch is mostly serving people who live a few minutes from the chair, which makes it a local habit rather than a destination. It also means the corridor carries a good many competing rooms along its length.
Both a phone number and a Facebook page are published, which is the standard pairing in this trade and more useful than it looks: the page tends to carry current work, the phone gets a booking. What the listing does not say is who cuts, what anything costs, or whether walk-ins are taken at all. Hairdressing is a personal service and those things are worth a short conversation before a first appointment rather than after one. The address at least is on the main road rather than behind it.
