A food shop on the downtown side of the Hope Slough.
Where the shop sits is the first useful thing. The Hope Slough runs along the north edge of downtown Chilliwack, dividing it from Fairfield Island, and The Mad Butcher is on the downtown side of that line, in the older commercial grid rather than out among the residential streets. Postal code V2P 2N8 covers a stretch of that grid a few blocks out from the Five Corners junction, in the part of town where trade has concentrated since long before the shopping centers to the south were built, and where a good deal of it has stayed.
The name announces a butcher, but it is filed under grocery here, and that overlap is normal rather than a contradiction. Independent food retail in Chilliwack tends to blur: a shop with a meat counter also carries eggs and dairy, a farm store selling its own beef puts produce out beside it. The reason is the land. Two thirds of the municipality sits inside the Agricultural Land Reserve, this is the largest dairy-producing region in British Columbia, and more than two dozen food processing companies operate in the city. A small food shop here has suppliers a short drive away that a comparable shop on the coast simply does not have. The same logic runs the roadside stands out through Greendale, Yarrow and Rosedale, which open with the corn in August and shut when it is finished.
There is no way to reach the business from here. No phone number, no website and no street number are published, so anything specific, what the counter actually holds, whether an order can be placed ahead, whether custom work is taken on, has to be settled in person. That is a real limitation and better said plainly than papered over. The location is the useful part: downtown, walkable from the Five Corners blocks, and on the side of the slough where the shops are.
