The word market in a Chilliwack business name usually means something. This one trades in Chilliwack Proper, in the blocks between the downtown core and the Highway 1 interchange, which is a plainer stretch of storefronts than the big box run out in Sardis, south of the highway. Most produce retail that deals directly with growers is out on the flat instead, on the roads through Greendale, Rosedale and Yarrow. Choosing a storefront in town means being found by people who are already out on errands rather than by people who set out for a farm store.
Food retail here rewards that kind of business more than it would in most cities of this size. The supermarkets are all national and so are absent from this directory, but the municipality contains 17,000 hectares of farmland and more than 700 farms, agriculture accounts for close to 30 per cent of local economic activity, and there are twenty-five or more food processing companies in the valley. Chilliwack is also the largest dairy producing area in British Columbia, with poultry and greenhouse growing behind it. What that adds up to on a shelf is a short distance between a field and a customer, and a stock list that changes with the season instead of pretending not to.
SKT Farm Market publishes a website, which is the most useful fact here, because it is the one place where what is actually in the store on a given week can be posted. No phone number is listed here and no street address either, though the postal code will bring a map close enough. Hours are not published anywhere here either. Nothing here describes what is stocked or where it comes from, and in this trade both of those shift through the year, so the website is the thing to check before setting off with a fixed list in mind.
