An independent German restaurant in the blocks that have been Chilliwack's centre since before the malls.
Downtown Chilliwack is older than most of what surrounds it. Five Corners was the commercial middle of the town well before the retail moved south, and roughly 31 per cent of the city's residents still live in this neighbourhood, more than any other. Chilliwack General Hospital is on Menholm Road inside it, the Coliseum and the municipal airport are here too, and the whole of it sits north of the long southward run of Vedder Road that took most of the shopping away.
This one sits in that core, and its name does most of the work a description would: it says which kitchen it keeps, which not every restaurant name manages. Worth knowing about eating out here generally is that the independent rooms are scattered rather than clustered. There is no restaurant district in Chilliwack, and the nearest thing to one is here. Vedder Road through Sardis and Vedder has the greatest number of rooms overall, though most sit in strip plazas and are easy to drive straight past. Out in Yarrow and Rosedale there are a few that have outlasted several owners. Chains are excluded from this directory, so what remains on the restaurant page is local by definition.
The listing itself is sparse. There is a postal code and no street number, no phone and no website, which for a restaurant means the two things a diner most wants, the hours and the menu, are both missing from this page. Neither should be guessed at. The postal code will bring a map to the right handful of downtown blocks and no closer. Restaurants also change hands, and a directory entry outlives a kitchen more often than anyone would like, so an entry without a phone number is a reason to confirm the room is still trading before making an evening of it.

The drive-throughs on Luckakuck are the visible half of eating here. The interesting half is downtown, out on the farm roads, and in the strip plazas nobody photographs.
