An independent restaurant in the blocks that have been Chilliwack's centre since before the malls.
Anyone trying to eat well in Chilliwack runs into the same structural fact: the independent dining rooms are scattered rather than clustered. There is no restaurant quarter. Vedder Road through Sardis and Vedder has the greatest number of rooms overall, though most sit in strip plazas and are easy to drive straight past, and out in Yarrow and Rosedale there are a few places that have outlasted several owners. The closest thing to a concentration is downtown, and that is where this listing sits.
Chilliwack Proper is the core neighbourhood, home to roughly 31 per cent of the city's residents, and its high street is a genuinely old one. Five Corners is the junction where Yale Road, Young Road and Wellington Avenue all arrive at once, and the blocks around it were the commercial centre of the town for decades before the malls were built. More than 350 businesses trade downtown across banks, clinics, pharmacies, small retail and food, and the District 1881 redevelopment on the old Chilliwack Cattle Sales site has pulled a second cluster in beside the first. Chains are excluded from this directory, so what is left downtown is local by definition.
Friendly Banners Restaurant appears here with a postal code and a neighbourhood and not much else. No phone number, no website, no street address in the record, which for a restaurant is the awkward set of gaps, because hours and whether a table can be held are the two things worth knowing in advance. Nothing in this entry indicates what is cooked or when the doors are open, and it would be an invention to say. The postal code will put a map on the right part of the downtown grid, close to Five Corners, and anything beyond that would be guesswork dressed up as information, which this directory is trying not to publish.

The drive-throughs on Luckakuck are the visible half of eating here. The interesting half is downtown, out on the farm roads, and in the strip plazas nobody photographs.
