Gyms & Fitness
An owner-run gym, in the old commercial grid around Five Corners.
Sports centres and gyms are not quite the same listing, though the two overlap enough that the line between them gets blurred. What they have in common is floor space, and floor space is the constraint that shapes this whole category in Chilliwack. Most of the independent operators here have solved it by taking industrial units behind Sardis, where the ceilings are high and the rent is not, or by working around the columns in older commercial buildings. A city of roughly 112,500 people that grew 11.6 per cent in five years generates more demand than it has obvious buildings to put it in.
Chilliwack Landing Sports Centre is listed in Chilliwack Proper, in the old commercial grid around Five Corners. Those blocks have been the commercial centre of the town since long before the malls, and they hold more than 350 businesses across banks, restaurants, clinics, pharmacies and small independent retail. A fitness address downtown catches a different pattern of use from one on Vedder Road: people already in the core for work or errands rather than people setting out from a subdivision. Nothing is recorded against the entry beyond that postal code, no telephone line and no site of its own, so memberships, drop-in arrangements and what is actually inside the building have to be established some other way.
The category is in better health here than the size of the city would suggest. National chains are excluded from this directory, which leaves independent gyms, strength and conditioning rooms, boxing and martial arts clubs and a run of smaller studios. Part of the demand comes from Canada Education Park at the south end, where the university, the RCMP Pacific Region Training Centre and the Justice Institute of BC put a lot of people who train seriously into one part of the city. Municipal leisure centres are listed separately.
