An owner-run gym, in the old commercial grid around Five Corners.
Brazilian jiu jitsu is a grappling art taught in classes on a mat, not a monthly pass to a room full of machines, and that distinction is the useful one here. Anyone after treadmills and a rack of dumbbells at seven in the morning is looking for a different sort of listing. What a club of this kind offers is instruction, a curriculum, training partners and a timetable, and the usual way in is a trial class rather than a walk through the door with a credit card.
The address is on Wellington Avenue, one of the three roads that arrive at Five Corners, which places it in the oldest commercial grid in Chilliwack. The downtown holds more than 350 businesses and about 31 per cent of the city's residents, so this is training space that some people can reach on foot. That is not true of most of the rest of it. The city's gyms and clubs lean heavily towards the industrial units behind Sardis and the plazas along Vedder Road, where the ceilings are high and the rent is not.
Demand for serious training in Chilliwack gets a push from the south end. Canada Education Park holds the University of the Fraser Valley campus, the RCMP Pacific Region Training Centre and a Justice Institute of BC campus, which concentrates a large number of people with a professional reason to stay fit into one corner of the city. None of that describes this particular club; it explains why a place of Chilliwack's size supports more mat space than an outsider would predict. No telephone number or website is recorded against this listing, so the street address is the only route in, and for a martial arts club the class schedule and the terms for a first session are exactly the things that have to be asked about directly.

The drive-throughs on Luckakuck are the visible half of eating here. The interesting half is downtown, out on the farm roads, and in the strip plazas nobody photographs.
