Most of what sporting goods means in this city involves a river. The Vedder and the Chilliwack are among the most heavily fished water in the Lower Mainland, so rods, tackle and river gear amount to a serious local trade rather than an aisle in a big box store, and the shops carrying it cluster toward Vedder Crossing where the anglers actually go. Around that sit hiking and climbing supply for Elk Mountain and the Cheam range, paddling for Cultus Lake, hunting supply for the back country, and the ordinary team sport business of a city with a lot of youth hockey. Garrison Running Co. reads as an exception to most of that, at least by its name, and the listing has it as an owner run sports shop near Garrison Crossing. The location makes sense on its own terms. Garrison Crossing was built on the grounds of CFB Chilliwack after the base closed in December 1997, and the subdivisions that filled in around it have put a large and still growing population at the south end of the city, on flat ground, with the mountains standing close on three sides of it.
