About Hide-A-Way Cafe
A coffee shop on Lark Road, in Vedder, between the Sardis malls and Vedder Crossing.
Lark Road runs through the part of Vedder that sits between the Sardis shopping centers and Vedder Crossing, which is residential ground rather than a commercial strip. A cafe there is working off the neighborhood around it rather than off passing traffic, and that usually means a different kind of trade from the drive-through-adjacent formats further along Vedder Road.
Coffee in this city divides fairly neatly by neighborhood, which is unusual and quite useful once you notice it. Downtown holds the sit-and-work rooms, several in heritage buildings around Five Corners and Wellington Avenue where the ceilings are high and the wifi was an afterthought. Garrison Crossing has the walkable-square version, because that is what the neighborhood was designed around. Vedder Road itself mostly serves people who are driving. And there is a rural strand, a farm shop with an espresso machine or a counter at the back of a nursery out in Rosedale, which only makes sense in a municipality where two thirds of the land is under crop. The national chains are not listed here at all.
Vedder is the fastest growing neighborhood in Chilliwack, up 39 per cent between 2011 and 2021, and it now holds more people than anywhere in the city except the downtown. Much of that growth landed in the south end around Garrison Crossing, built on the old Canadian Forces base after it closed in 1997, and in the subdivisions that filled in beside it. More residents within walking distance is the single thing a small cafe most wants.
Hide-A-Way Cafe publishes neither a phone number nor a website, so hours, whether there is food alongside the coffee, and whether it is set up for sitting or for taking away are all things to establish in person. The street address and postal code above are enough to find the door.

The twelve Chilliwack neighborhoods, and what each one is actually like
The City defines twelve neighborhoods. Three of them hold about two thirds of the population and most of the shopfronts, and the other nine run from a drained lake bed to a hillside to a working dairy landscape. Here is the honest version of each.
