Vedder Road carries more of Chilliwack's independent restaurants than any other street in the city, and hardly any of them announce themselves. The rooms sit in strip plazas set back behind parking, one unit among several, easy to drive past for years without registering. Sangam Indian Cuisine is at Unit 25, 5725 Vedder Road, on the run south through Sardis and Vedder toward the river crossing, which is exactly that sort of address. The scattering is the thing to understand about eating out here. There is no restaurant district. The downtown blocks around Five Corners hold the highest concentration, with District 1881 adding a run of newer kitchens beside them, but the greatest raw number of rooms is along this corridor, and out in Yarrow and Rosedale a handful of places have outlasted several changes of owner. Chains are excluded from this directory, so what is left on the list is genuinely local.
This is one of the better-furnished listings on the site: a street address down to the unit number, a phone number and a website. The unit number is not a formality; an address in the twenties means a building with a lot of tenancies in it, and without one you are reading signage from the car park. Between them you can settle the things a directory page has no business guessing at, which is to say the hours, whether the kitchen does takeaway or delivery, and what is on the menu. None of that is stated here, deliberately, and nothing should be read into its absence. The website is the sensible first stop, since a restaurant that keeps one usually keeps the menu on it, and the menu is what most people actually came looking for. What this page can tell you is where the room is and what kind of cooking it does. Given how busy the corridor gets at the dinner hour, and how little of the parking belongs to any one unit, a call ahead is rarely a wasted minute.
