Strip plazas are the defining architecture of the Vedder Road corridor, and they explain how it holds more restaurants than any other part of Chilliwack while appearing to hold fewer. A dining room set back behind a parking lot does not present itself to the street the way one downtown does, and you tend to find these places by already knowing they are there. South Garden Restaurant is listed at 5669 Vedder Road, on the stretch between the Sardis shopping centers and the crossing at the Vedder River.
The neighborhood behind that address does more than house people. Canada Education Park is at the south end of Vedder, holding the University of the Fraser Valley's Chilliwack campus, the RCMP Pacific Region Training Centre and a Justice Institute of BC campus. Garrison Crossing next to it was built on the grounds of CFB Chilliwack after the base closed in December 1997. The result is a mix of students, trainees and families within a few minutes of this part of the road, which is a different catchment from the retail traffic further north and a steadier one across the week. None of that says anything about who eats here, only that a good many people live and work within reach of it.
Nothing at all about the food is included. There is no phone number, no website and no photographs, so the name and the address are the whole of it. Chains are excluded from this directory, which makes everything on the page independent by definition, though independent says nothing about what comes out of the kitchen. Anyone choosing on the strength of this alone is choosing on very little, and there is no pretense otherwise. It records where the place is and leaves the rest to be found out in person.
