Something over 17,000 hectares of Chilliwack is farmland inside the Agricultural Land Reserve, carrying more than 700 farms and close to 30 per cent of the city's economic activity. This is the largest dairy-producing area in British Columbia, with poultry and greenhouse growing behind it, and 25 or more food processing companies working the output. All of which makes independent food retail a different proposition here than in a commuter suburb, because the distance between a field and a shelf can be genuinely short.
The Local Harvest Market is listed on Lickman Road, in the Village West industrial area of Chilliwack West. That neighbourhood is the odd one out in this city: barely 2,500 residents in cul-de-sacs and small subdivisions up the side of Chilliwack Mountain, and yet two of the busiest commercial areas anywhere in Chilliwack, both of them there for the highway rather than for the neighbours. A Lickman Road address is nearer the trucks and the Highway 1 traffic than any residential street, which for a food business is a logistics answer as much as a retail one.
What the shop actually stocks is not something this entry records, and produce-led retail in the valley moves with the seasons in a way supermarket shelving is designed to hide. The roadside trade through Greendale, Yarrow and Rosedale opens with the corn in August and shuts when the corn is done; a year-round shop works differently, but the same calendar sits underneath it. Supply is not guaranteed year to year either; Sumas Prairie, west of the city, went under water in November 2021. Anyone driving out specially might also want to ask what comes off local ground and what is brought in, since the two sit side by side in most independent food shops and the difference is not always marked on the shelf. A phone number and a website are both published, and either will settle that faster than a directory page can.

The drive-throughs on Luckakuck are the visible half of eating here. The interesting half is downtown, out on the farm roads, and in the strip plazas nobody photographs.
