A butcher's counter is a different sort of food shopping from a supermarket aisle, and in this part of the Fraser Valley the difference is more than sentimental. Chilliwack sits inside roughly 17,000 hectares of farmland carrying more than 700 farms, agriculture accounts for close to 30 per cent of local economic activity, and there are 25 or more food processing companies in the municipality. This is the largest dairy producing area in British Columbia, with poultry and greenhouse growing not far behind it. The distance between a field and a shelf can be genuinely short here in a way it is not in most cities of this size.
The Town Butcher trades at Unit 301, 5580 Vedder Road, in the Vedder neighbourhood not far from Garrison Crossing. Vedder grew 39 per cent between 2011 and 2021, faster than anywhere in the city except Promontory, and it now holds more people than any neighbourhood but the downtown. Much of that growth is at the south end, in Garrison Crossing on the grounds of the Canadian Forces base that closed in December 1997, and in the subdivisions that filled in around it. A food shop on this stretch of Vedder Road is serving a lot of relatively new households, most of whom did their previous shopping somewhere else entirely.
A telephone number is published, (604) 701-6328, and no website, which puts the weight of any specific question on a call. This directory does not record what the shop stocks, where any of it comes from, or whether it does anything beyond the plain meaning of its trade. If you are after a particular cut, or ordering for a crowd, ringing ahead is the obvious move, and it is also the only way to establish when the counter is staffed. The unit number matters too: this is a suite within a larger building rather than a standalone shopfront.

The drive-throughs on Luckakuck are the visible half of eating here. The interesting half is downtown, out on the farm roads, and in the strip plazas nobody photographs.
