An independent restaurant on the downtown side of the Hope Slough.
Grills, diners and the sort of room that does not describe itself as a concept are a real part of the eating-out landscape in a working city of this size, and they rarely photograph well enough to get noticed. Uptown Grill is one of the independent kitchens in Chilliwack Proper, on the downtown side of the Hope Slough, which places it in the core neighbourhood where about 31 per cent of the city's population lives and where the highest concentration of independent restaurants happens to be. Concentration is relative here. Vedder Road carries more rooms in total, spread thinly through strip plazas over several kilometres, and Yarrow and Rosedale hold a few survivors of their own, but downtown is the only part of Chilliwack where you can leave one place and reach three others on foot. That sounds like a small thing, and in a city laid out as an L along two road corridors it is not.
What this record contains is a postal code, a neighbourhood and a category, and that is the honest extent of it. There is no phone number, no website and no street address given, so nothing about the menu, the hours, the size of the room or the days it opens can be stated here without making it up. Independent restaurants also change hands, and anything a directory says about the cooking has a shelf life. What can be said is where to look. The postal code puts a map on the right side of the slough, inside the old commercial grid that has been the centre of the town since long before Cottonwood or Chilliwack Mall existed, and within a short walk of the District 1881 blocks. If the door is shut when you get there, other independent kitchens are inside a few minutes on foot, which is not true anywhere else in the city.
