Barbers
An owner-run barber shop, in the Sardis retail district.
Barbering came back in Chilliwack the way it came back most places, on the strength of new neighbourhoods and the return of the traditional shop format, and the trade here now runs in two kinds of room. There are the newer shops in Garrison Crossing and the growing parts of Vedder, with the chairs, the hot towel and the appointment app, and there are the older two-chair rooms downtown that have been cutting hair on the same block for longer than most of the city has existed. Franchised chains are not listed on this site, which in this trade removes very little, since almost all of it is independently owned anyway.
This listing, recorded simply as Barber, sits in Sardis. That is the part of Chilliwack carrying a wildly disproportionate share of the city's storefronts: Cottonwood Centre with something over seventy tenancies, Chilliwack Mall across the way, and the Luckakuck Way strip between the two. A barbershop in that district draws on people who are already out doing something else, which is a different pattern of trade from a shop in a residential pocket that customers make a deliberate trip to reach. The Coqualeetza Lands and the Skowkale and Yakweakwioose communities lie in the same neighbourhood, a reminder that Sardis is a good deal more than its shopping frontage.
No street address, telephone number or website is recorded here, which leaves the postal code and the map pin as the way to find the door. That is ordinary enough for a small owner-run shop, where the walk-in is the booking system and the sign on the window is the marketing. It does mean anyone planning around a particular day or hour is working blind, so the sensible approach is to treat this as a place to check in person rather than one to build an afternoon around. Sardis is compact enough that doing so costs very little.

The drive-throughs on Luckakuck are the visible half of eating here. The interesting half is downtown, out on the farm roads, and in the strip plazas nobody photographs.
