About Dollar Store

An owner-run corner store, on the downtown side of the Hope Slough.

Corner shops still do real work in Chilliwack, and the reason is geography. The municipality covers 261 square kilometres and the built-up part of it is a narrow L, which leaves a great many households ten minutes' drive from a supermarket. That is why this category runs longer here than in most cities of similar population: the village store in Yarrow, the crossroads shops in Greendale and Rosedale that double as the post drop and the lottery counter, the ones up on Promontory serving a hill with no other retail on it, and the older shops in the downtown grid.

This one belongs to the last group. The postal code places it in Chilliwack Proper, the core neighborhood that holds about 31 per cent of the city's residents and its oldest commercial blocks. Five Corners, where Yale Road, Young Road and Wellington Avenue all arrive at once, has been the center of town since long before the malls existed, and the surrounding streets count more than 350 businesses. A small shop in a dense residential grid works differently from one at a rural crossroads. It serves people on foot, on short trips, filling gaps between larger shops rather than replacing them. Chilliwack General Hospital is on Menholm Road inside the same neighborhood, and the District 1881 redevelopment has drawn a second cluster of food and retail in beside the old centre.

The name is generic enough to tell you very little, and the listing does not expand on it. Branded petrol-station kiosks and national convenience chains are kept off these pages, so what remains is largely family-run. No phone number, website or street address is published, which means the postal code is what you have to work with, and it will get a map to the right few blocks. For a shop of this kind that is usually sufficient, since corner stores are found by proximity rather than by search.

The twelve Chilliwack neighborhoods, and what each one is actually like

The City defines twelve neighborhoods. Three of them hold about two thirds of the population and most of the shopfronts, and the other nine run from a drained lake bed to a hillside to a working dairy landscape. Here is the honest version of each.
