Chilliwack covers 261 square kilometres, and a good deal of that is thinly settled once you leave the central L, which means a great many households here are a ten-minute drive from a supermarket. That is the reason this category runs longer than you might expect for a city of this size, and why the shops on it do real work rather than selling convenience at a markup. The village store in Yarrow, the crossroads shops in Greendale and Rosedale that double as the post drop and the lottery counter, the ones up on Promontory serving a hill with no other retail on it: all of them exist because the alternative is a drive.
Flemings Market sits in Vedder, which is a different case again. Vedder is the fastest-growing neighbourhood in the city, up 39 per cent between 2011 and 2021, and it now holds more people than anywhere except the downtown. Most of that growth is at the south end, around Garrison Crossing on the grounds of the Canadian Forces base that closed in 1997, and in the subdivisions that filled in beside it. A store on the long run of Vedder Road south toward the river serves a lot of houses that did not exist twenty years ago, along with whatever is passing on the way to the crossing. Vedder Road is the spine of all that growth, and it carries the traffic to match.
Branded petrol-station kiosks and national chains are kept off this list, so what remains is largely family-run. This entry gives a postal code and a neighbourhood and very little else: no phone, no website, no street number. Stock in shops of this kind varies enormously from one to the next, and there is no honest way to describe it from here.
