About MCC thrift shop
An independent corner store in the blocks that have been Chilliwack's centre since before the malls.
The heading on this page says convenience store and the name says thrift shop, and those are two different things. Directory categories are blunt instruments; a business gets filed into the nearest available bucket, and sometimes the nearest available bucket is not very near. What the record establishes is that this is a small independent retail operation in the downtown, not which of the two descriptions fits it better. That is worth knowing before setting out with a particular errand in mind. The location is at least unambiguous in character. Chilliwack Proper holds around 31 per cent of the city's population and the oldest commercial ground in it, the blocks radiating out from Five Corners where Yale Road, Young Road and Wellington Avenue all arrive at once. Something over 350 businesses trade downtown, and the District 1881 redevelopment on the old Chilliwack Cattle Sales site has added a second cluster beside the original. Small shops here are surrounded by other small shops, which makes a visit easy to combine with something else.
The corner store category exists in Chilliwack for a practical reason. The municipality covers 261 square kilometres and most of that is farmland, so a great many households sit a ten minute drive from a supermarket. The village store out in Yarrow, the crossroads shops in Greendale and Rosedale that double as the post drop and the lottery counter, the ones up on Promontory serving a hill with no other retail on it: all of those are doing real work. The downtown ones operate under different pressure, with a supermarket never far off, and tend to survive on foot traffic and on being open when other places are not. No phone number, website or street address appears on this listing, only the postal code, so this is one to find on the ground rather than to call ahead.
