Being a corner store in Sardis is a specific proposition. This is where Chilliwack does most of its shopping: Cottonwood Centre with something over seventy tenancies, Chilliwack Mall facing it, and Luckakuck Way between the two carrying the closest thing the city has to a big-box strip. Wells Rd. Grocery operates within a few minutes of all of it, which means it is not competing on range. It competes on the walk, on the one item somebody needs now, and on being less trouble than crossing four lanes of traffic for a carton of milk.
That is a different job from most of the shops on this page. The corner store still does real work across the rest of the municipality, because Chilliwack is large and thinly settled outside the central L, and a household ten minutes from a supermarket is ordinary here rather than remote. The list runs long as a result: the village shop in Yarrow, the crossroads counters in Greendale and Rosedale that also handle the post and the lottery tickets, the ones up on Promontory serving a hill with no other retail on it, and the older stores in the downtown grid.
