A bookshop on Wellington Avenue, on the downtown side of the Hope Slough.
Wellington Avenue runs through the oldest part of Chilliwack, close to Five Corners, the junction where Yale Road, Young Road and Wellington all arrive at once. That corner was the commercial center of the town long before the malls existed, and the downtown still counts more than 350 businesses across banks, clinics, restaurants and small independent retail. The Book Man sits on that street, and for anyone who has spent any time in this city the name needs little introduction. It is one of the places people give directions by.
Chilliwack does better for books than a city of ninety thousand has any right to, and the reason is a substantial independent new and used trade that stayed downtown instead of following the retail south to Cottonwood Centre and the Luckakuck strip. These are large browsing shops with deep second hand stock rather than boutiques. Around them sits a thrift and charity shop layer worth knowing about, and a small run of specialist religious and academic sellers, the latter connected to the university campus. National chains are not listed here. That concentration is worth stating plainly, because it is the sort of thing a city can lose without anyone noticing until it has gone.
Both a telephone number and a website are published above, which makes this one of the better documented entries on the site. Use them. The stock of a second hand shop turns over by definition, so anything specific, a title, an author, a particular section, is a question for the counter rather than for a directory page, and the same goes for hours. Shops of this sort reward an unhurried visit rather than a targeted one, which is roughly the difference between a second hand counter and an order placed online. The postal code will take a map to the right stretch of Wellington, within walking distance of the Five Corners blocks and of District 1881 beyond them.
