Book Stores
An owner-run bookshop, on the downtown side of the Hope Slough.
Wellington Avenue is where Chilliwack keeps its books. For a city of ninety thousand the local trade runs unusually deep, and it has stayed downtown instead of drifting out to the malls: large browsing shops with serious second-hand stock rather than boutiques, plus a thrift and charity layer underneath and a few specialist religious and academic sellers connected to the university campus at the south end. Nugget Used Books sits at 45832 Wellington Avenue, in the middle of that run.
The block matters here. Five Corners, where Yale Road, Young Road and Wellington Avenue all arrive at once, has been the commercial centre of the town since long before the shopping centres existed, and the streets around it still carry more than 350 businesses. A second-hand bookshop is a good fit for that kind of grid, because it depends on people walking past with an hour to spare rather than on anyone making a special trip. It is also, by its nature, a shop you cannot work from a list. What is on the shelves is whatever has come through the door.
Neither a phone number nor a website appears in this listing, which is not unusual for a used bookshop and does mean there is no way to check for a particular title before going. The postal code will put a map on the right stretch of Wellington. Past that, this page can tell you where the shop is and what kind of shop it is, and nothing whatever about what is currently in stock, which is more or less the honest position for any second-hand seller. Anyone hunting a specific edition is better off treating the visit as a browse. The upside of that arrangement is the one every used bookshop trades on, which is that you generally leave with something you were not looking for.

The drive-throughs on Luckakuck are the visible half of eating here. The interesting half is downtown, out on the farm roads, and in the strip plazas nobody photographs.
