For a city of ninety thousand, Chilliwack does unusually well for books, and the reason is a substantial independent new-and-used trade concentrated in the historic downtown around Wellington Avenue rather than in the malls. These are large browsing shops rather than boutiques, with deep second-hand stock, children's sections and, in at least one case, a serious vinyl counter attached. There is also a thrift and charity-shop book layer worth knowing about, and a small run of specialist religious and academic sellers; the latter connected to the University of the Fraser Valley campus at the south end of the city. National book chains are excluded.
