Furniture retail in Chilliwack splits three ways. There are the independent showrooms, generally in Sardis or on the Young Road corridor, selling mattresses, sofas and dining sets to a city that has been building houses at a furious rate. There is a strong second-hand and consignment trade, which is what happens in a place with a lot of both downsizing and arriving. And there is a small but real maker layer; cabinetmakers, live-edge and reclaimed-timber workshops in the industrial pockets and out on the rural roads, working with wood that in some cases came off local slopes.
