Book Stores
An independent bookshop near the Cottonwood and Chilliwack Mall cluster.
Chilliwack reads better than its size suggests. A city of ninety thousand or so supports a real independent new and used book trade, and most of it has settled in the old downtown, on and around Wellington Avenue, in premises large enough to browse rather than boutiques you pass through in a minute. National chains are excluded from these pages, so everything in the category here is genuinely independent, which is part of why the list runs as long as it does. That makes this business's address a slight departure. C4 Cloudia's carries a Sardis postal code, which places it near the Cottonwood Centre and Chilliwack Mall cluster instead of among the downtown shops.
The trade off is a familiar one for second hand booksellers. Downtown puts a bookshop among other browsing shops, where customers move from one door to the next. Sardis holds a share of Chilliwack's storefronts out of all proportion to its size, so far more people move through it on any given day, but almost all of them are there for something else. A bookshop on that ground depends on catching people mid errand, which is a different proposition from being a destination.
What is missing here is worth stating plainly. No phone number, no website and no street address are recorded, only the postal code and a map position, which is thin ground on which to plan a trip across town from anywhere else in the city. Stock in the used trade is by nature unrepeatable, and there is no way to know what is on the shelves in a given week. Without a published number there is no easy way to ask first either, so the honest advice is to go when you are already in that part of Sardis, with an hour to spare and no fixed intention.

The City defines twelve neighborhoods. Three of them hold about two thirds of the population and most of the shopfronts, and the other nine run from a drained lake bed to a hillside to a working dairy landscape. Here is the honest version of each.
