Heritage buildings around Five Corners and Wellington Avenue hold most of the downtown coffee rooms, the sit-and-work kind with high ceilings where the wifi arrived as an afterthought. Garrison Crossing has the version built for a walkable square. Along Vedder Road the format serves traffic rather than people who mean to stay for an hour. Coffee in this city sorts itself by neighbourhood more than by style, and The Royal Cafe is filed with the first group.

The junction explains a good deal about that. Yale Road, Young Road and Wellington Avenue all arrive at Five Corners at once, and the blocks around it were the commercial centre of the town for generations before any shopping centre was built. This neighbourhood also holds Chilliwack General Hospital, the Coliseum and the municipal airport, but what matters to a café is the few dense blocks in the middle of it. A coffee shop here is within walking distance of a great deal of ordinary daily business, which is a different proposition from one you have to drive to and then drive away from.

It means the practical questions, whether there is table service, whether the room suits sitting and working, what time the doors open, are all things to settle in person or through somebody who has been in recently. Small independent cafés in Chilliwack change hands and change their hours without announcing it anywhere a directory can see, so treat anything older than a few months as unverified.
