Bars & Pubs
A pub in the blocks that have been Chilliwack's center since before the malls.
Anyone hoping to walk out of one licensed room and into the next will be disappointed by the way this city is laid out. There is no such block in Chilliwack, and turning up with that expectation means spending the evening in a car. What the city has instead is neighborhood pubs, spread thin: the oldest rooms downtown, several of them attached to hotels that were here before the malls, larger suburban places with patios out in Sardis and Vedder, and a couple at Vedder Crossing that fill with fishing traffic when the river is running. Chain pub brands are left off this list, so what remains is independently run.
Wellington Social House is one of the downtown pubs. No street address is published, only a V2P postal code that lands in the core, so the map pin should be treated as approximate rather than as a door number. That is not unusual for a room that does most of its trade with people who already know where it is, but it does mean a first visit is easier if you confirm the address first. There is no phone number or website here either, which leaves fewer ways to check. What is published is the name, the category and the neighborhood, and it stops there.
The blocks this sits among are the oldest commercial ground in the city. Five Corners, where Yale Road, Young Road and Wellington Avenue all meet at once, has been the center of the town since long before the retail moved south, and the downtown still counts more than 350 businesses of every kind. District 1881, built on the old Chilliwack Cattle Sales site, has added a newer cluster of food and drink beside the historic one. A pub in this part of Chilliwack is therefore within walking distance of a good deal else, which is not true of most licensed premises in the municipality.

The City defines twelve neighborhoods. Three of them hold about two thirds of the population and most of the shopfronts, and the other nine run from a drained lake bed to a hillside to a working dairy landscape. Here is the honest version of each.
