About King's Music

An independent music shop in one of the Sardis plazas along Vedder Road.

Selling instruments requires a wide catchment, and in Chilliwack that means the south end rather than the downtown. King's Music is listed on Luckakuck Way, the closest thing this city has to a big-box strip, running between Cottonwood Centre and its something over seventy tenancies and Chilliwack Mall across the way. That is among the heaviest retail traffic in the city, in a neighborhood holding a wildly disproportionate share of the storefronts for its size.

Music retail is a small category here and an unexpectedly durable one. Chilliwack sustains a couple of instrument shops handling sales, rentals, repairs and lessons, and the reason they persist is structural: the school district and the university campus at the south end of the city produce a reliable wave of band and orchestral rentals every September. Around them sits a used-record trade, with one of the larger downtown bookshops running a substantial vinyl counter, plus a scattering of independent teachers and repair techs working out of studios rather than shopfronts. Three or four listings rather than thirty. For anyone hunting a luthier or a rental clarinet in the eastern Fraser Valley, they are the right three or four.

There is a street but no building number, and neither a phone number nor a website is published, so there is no way to tell which parts of that trade it covers. Sales, rental, repair and teaching are four different businesses that often share one room, and knowing which are on offer is exactly the sort of thing to establish before turning up with a broken instrument under one arm. Shops of this kind run at their busiest in September, and a rental is hardest to come by in those same weeks, which argues for calling in during August rather than after the first week of school. The postal code will get a map to the right stretch of Luckakuck Way. The rest is a question for the counter.

The twelve Chilliwack neighborhoods, and what each one is actually like

The City defines twelve neighborhoods. Three of them hold about two thirds of the population and most of the shopfronts, and the other nine run from a drained lake bed to a hillside to a working dairy landscape. Here is the honest version of each.
