About Long & McQuade
A music shop in the Sardis retail district.
Every September the school district and the campus at the south end of the city put another cohort of students into rented clarinets, trumpets and violins, and that recurring fact is most of the reason Chilliwack still supports instrument retail at all. It is a small category and an unexpectedly durable one. A couple of shops handle sales, rentals, repairs and lessons between them. Around the edges sit a used-record trade, including a substantial vinyl counter inside one of the larger downtown bookshops, and a scatter of independent teachers and repair techs who work from a studio rather than a shopfront.
Long and McQuade is listed in Sardis, which is where a shop like this would want to be. The neighborhood is the city's retail center of gravity, ranked only fourth by area but carrying a startling number of Chilliwack's storefronts, and it is the part of town people from Yarrow, Rosedale, Promontory and the Chilliwack River valley are already driving to. That matters more for instruments than for most goods, because the trip usually ends with something bulky and awkward going into a car, and because a rental that needs returning at the end of a school year is a journey made twice.
Nothing else is known. It carries no street address, no number to call and no site to check, which leaves the neighborhood and the postal code V2R 3S9 to work from. For anything that depends on stock or timing, a rental instrument at the start of a term, a repair with a date on it, a particular instrument sitting on the floor, the only reliable step is contacting the shop directly and asking. Three or four listings is all this category runs to in the city, which makes for a short list, though in the eastern valley it is the only list there is.

The twelve Chilliwack neighborhoods, and what each one is actually like
The City defines twelve neighborhoods. Three of them hold about two thirds of the population and most of the shopfronts, and the other nine run from a drained lake bed to a hillside to a working dairy landscape. Here is the honest version of each.
