Fraser Valley neighbourhood
The city's core urban neighbourhood and its downtown, holding about 31 per cent of Chilliwack's residents. Historic Five Corners, District 1881, Chilliwack General Hospital, the Coliseum and the municipal airport are all inside it.
If Chilliwack has a high street it is here, and it is a genuinely old one. Five Corners is the junction where Yale Road, Young Road and Wellington Avenue all arrive at once, and the blocks around it have been the commercial centre of the town since long before the malls existed. Downtown counts more than 350 businesses across banks, restaurants, clinics, pharmacies and small independent retail, and the District 1881 redevelopment on the old Chilliwack Cattle Sales site has pulled a second cluster of food and retail in beside it.
The neighbourhood is more than the downtown, though. It runs north to the Hope Slough and takes in Chilliwack General Hospital on Menholm Road, the Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre, Townsend Park and the municipal airport. That hospital is why so much of the city's medical and dental work has its address in this neighbourhood rather than out on Vedder Road — clinics cluster where the hospital is.
It is also the part of Chilliwack most likely to have an upstairs. A good number of the accountants, lawyers, notaries and insurance brokers in this directory are on a first floor above a shop on Wellington or Yale, which is not true anywhere else in the city.
